While teaching two introductory statistics courses at University of Missouri-Kansas City, I have used Alan Barnard’s ProCon Cloud process as an entry point for students to not only do rapid research on a subject of interest to them, but also target research to answer specific questions raised by the process. This webinar will discuss the use of the ProCon Cloud Process, in the context of the classroom and the business setting.

Chronic Problems and Good Discussion
Presented by Michael Round

The list of crises – heroin addiction, financial meltdown, runaway debt, obesity epidemic – not only grows, but each crisis suggests a world teetering on the brink of catastrophe.  Though consequential, these crises fall outside the domain of our daily relevance, while union disputes and contract negotiations, employee disharmony and turnover, etc., are the chronic problems affecting performance while demanding our attention.

Though different in reach, these “Global” vs. “Local” conflicts are similar in construction: Little improvement is made, any change is minor with all parties leaving a discussion feeling dissatisfied, and consequently, the unresolved conflict persists.

While teaching two introductory statistics courses at University of Missouri-Kansas City, I have used Alan Barnard’s ProCon Cloud process as an entry point for students to not only do rapid research on a subject of interest to them, but also target research to answer specific questions raised by the process.   The end product is a well written research paper averaging 12 pages, with the only rubric being “Am I Proud of My Paper When I Look in the Mirror?”  This structured but natural process has allowed different points of view to be verbalized, leading to a classroom alive not necessarily “polite” discussion but something much more valuable:  respectful but heated discussion where students’ points of view are genuinely expressed.

This webinar will discuss the use of the ProCon Cloud Process, in the context of the classroom and the business setting.
